Industry Experience

Dave Lewis is an industry pioneer in the application of technology and data analytics to the law, with over three decades of experience in artificial intelligence (“AI”) and statistics. As Chief Scientific Officer at Redgrave Data, Dave utilizes his deep knowledge of text analytics and statistics to support clients in implementing and defending processes that address complex information management issues in litigation, corporate investigations, and regulatory oversight. He also leads the development of analytic approaches that allow Redgrave Data clients to reduce costs and manage risks in applying AI.

Prior to joining Redgrave Data, Dave served as Executive Vice President – AI Research, Development, and Ethics at Reveal-Brainspace. He designed and led the development of machine learning, language processing, and statistical evaluation techniques for eDiscovery and enterprise text analytics applications, with an emphasis on effectiveness, defensibility, interpretability, and auditability. Dave has also held research positions at the University of Chicago, Bell Labs, and AT&T Labs, as well as consulting to more than 50 corporations, government organizations, law firms, and investors. Having served as a consulting expert or expert witness in numerous eDiscovery and patent disputes, Dave has extensive experience with meet-and-confers and report writing and has testified in U.S. Federal Court.

During his career, Dave pioneered many techniques now common in text analytics, work for which he was elected a Fellow of the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) in 2006. In 2016, he received a Test of Time Award from the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval.

Dave is widely respected as a researcher, inventor, writer, educator, and thought leader in legal technology and academic computer science. He has led innovative efforts in AI ethics, including co-chairing the EDRM (Electronic Discovery Reference Model) working group on AI Ethics and Bias. He served on the Executive Committee for the IAAIL (International Association for Artificial Intelligence and Law) from 2017 to 2021 and on the Seventh Circuit Electronic Discovery Pilot Program Committee from 2012 to 2020. Dave has also served on numerous committees guiding civilian and defense evaluations of natural language processing and information retrieval technology, including co-founding the NIST TREC (National Institute of Standards Test Retrieval Conference) Filtering Track and Legal Track.
